About Us#

About Dr. James Swift#

Dr. James Swift is a Research Oceanographer Emeritus at the UCSD Scripps Institution of Oceanography. His research interests include Arctic physical oceanography, ocean measurement and interpretation, and World Ocean water masses and circulation. He helps coordinate academic field activities for US GO-SHIP and is past director of the CLIVAR and Carbon Hydrographic Data Office (CCHDO). With John “Oz” Osborne he created this suite of ocean data exploration tools and data for teaching and research.

About Java OceanAtlas#

Java OceanAtlas was developed by scientific programmer John “Oz” Osborne (OceanAtlas Software, Vashon, WA, USA), with assistance from data scientist Maria Osborne working with Dr. James Swift. Read about the Background of Java OceanAtlas.

About the Data#

The data on this site were assembled by Dr. James Swift from sources including the CLIVAR and Carbon Hydrographic Data Office, the Reid/Mantyla data set, Syd Levitus’ World Ocean Atlas data sets, as well as his own research files. A host of talented UCSD undergraduate research assistants prepared data files and built the site, with assistance from CCHDO technical specialists. Read data acknowledgements

About this site#

The current site is built using sphinx with the pydata theme, the organizaiton is taken directly from the work done by Dakshh Saraf. The principal design and implementation of the previous site were carried out by Dakshh Saraf. Earlier versions of the site were created and managed by Carolina Berys-Gonzalez, Matthew Chen, and Roxanne Lee. The origional JOA DPO Examples site design was created by Roxanne Lee and Irene Chan, it is now also using a sphinx and a standard template.
